Not cricket, though
Drama unfolds at the cusp of impossible situation and improbable challenge. The plot is multi-dimensional, throwing light into the mind of the performers. Among sporting games, cricket alone has the capacity to hold a mirror to the intricacies of life. It is a microcosm of the society that it belongs to. That is why a C L R James was able to trace and picture the sociological history of the Caribbean islands through the prism of cricket. Football, howsoever universal maybe its appeal, couldn't have afforded him that opportunity. Cricket always provides a canvas to mount something bigger than the obvious picture. That is why it lent itself to sublime verse. Alas, the Twenty20, the latest offspring of the avuncular game, seems precisely to rob the quintessence of the game.
Tassie firm links atolls to world
THE hope on these young faces is the product of a Tasmanian company helping one of the poorest countries in the Pacific. Two years ago Kingston-based Powercom Systems installed an FM radio network on the tiny island Republic of Kiribati. The remote archipelago northeast of Australia includes 32 atolls dispersed over 3,500,000 square kilometres. Powercom is now trialling a Wi-Max wireless internet system that will give Kiribati cutting-edge technology not yet commercially available here. Although most of the nation's 90,000 residents don't have computers and some are even without power, high-speed internet access will help the government, schools and hospitals connect to the world in ways not possible before. Powercom Systems' business manager Malcolm Crosse has worked closely with the people of Kiribati.
Marinelli: Lions won't waive Rogers
This is the best year he's had, he practiced all year and didn't miss any games." Rogers had a career-high seven sacks this season and was a dominant force as the Lions rolled to a 6-2 record at the halfway point. Beginning with the 31-21 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, though, Rogers' production plummeted. In Detroit's six-game losing streak, Rogers had just 17 tackles (only eight solo tackles), no sacks, no forced fumbles and no fumble recoveries. While Rogers didn't participate in training camp because of knee problems, he missed almost no practice time and he played in all 16 games for the first time since 2004. Whether Rogers stays or goes, Marinelli continues to maintain that character and a passion for playing football is at the top of his agenda in formulating a roster.
Cerys: We were different animals outside jungle
HEARTBROKEN Cerys Matthews has revealed exactly why her "perfect" romance with celebrity jungle lover Marc Bannerman dramatically hit the skids. Talking exclusively to the News of the World singer Cerys told how she sensationally dumped the former EastEnders star just before Valentine's Day after realising they were a total MISMATCH. She said: "I fell for Marc and loved being with him...but we were very different in many ways. It had to end." In fact the whirlwind fling that began so magically in front of millions of TV viewers on I'm a Celebrity was wrecked by a catalogue of differences: HE loves his cool showbiz life in a trendy part of london, SHE'S a mum-of-two village girl in Wales. HE'S a protective macho man who takes charge on dates and orders everything, SHE'S a fiercely independent spirit who insists on making her own decisions.
The IDF's humane heart and professional approach
With words that I would hear repeatedly over the following days, he asked me how I could violate my sacred IDF oath to "love the Jewish homeland and its citizens" and to "sacrifice all my strength, and even my life" to defend them? He reminded me that hatred between Jews had facilitated the Temples' destruction in Israel, and excoriated me for bringing ruin on this, the third Jewish commonwealth. Amnon, his old warrior self again, assailed me, "You should be ashamed." Should I? In fact, the same code of ethics that binds members of the IDF also obligates them to "preserve the laws of Israel" and its "values as a Jewish and democratic State." Both the Israel government and the Knesset had repeatedly approved the disengagement plan as a means of safeguarding demographic and democratic integrity.
UK united on obesity threat
The government's proposals on tackling obesity have been greeted with widespread approval from public health organisations. Health secretary Alan Johnson outlined plans to spend £372 million on the initiative in the Commons today, saying he wanted to reverse trends identified in last year's Foresight report. That predicted over half of men and women would become clinically obese by 2050, leading the government to set itself the target of becoming the first "major country" to "reverse the rising tide of obesity". Today's proposals cover initiatives helping both children and adults to eat more healthily and take more exercise. Incentives for better health will be introduced while personalised advice and support will be made available. Mr Johnson admitted it was difficult to keep a healthy weight in today's society but used this as an argument in favour of increased government intervention.

Four hurt in French Valley plane crash
My mechanic friend noticed and then made a major communication effort to try to contact as many pilots and owners as possible to urge them to change to synthetic oil which didn't break down like regular oil at the higher heat ranges that occurred due to the slower air speed conditions and the crashes pretty much quit happening altogether. Incidentally, I've seen statistics that say horses are the No. 1 most dangerous mode of transportation and air travel is the safest when factoring in miles traveled. Highway travel was the next most dangerous after horses. It's a fact, however, that sooner or later we don't get out of this life alive, so I'd rather get out and go than sit around and wait. Have a nice day! GetaLife wrote on Feb 27, 2008 3:31 PM:I always laugh when people buy a house near a road, freeway and in this case an airport and then complain about the noise and want it go away.
Beckham's Still Got Seoul
He shoots, he scores! David Beckham got suited up in the soccer playing way for his match in South Korea today. Before taking the field he stopped to chat with some of the many fans that came out to watch him in his element. With Victoria finally done with her Spice Girls tour, I gotta believe that home to LA is the next stop on his trip. UK PopSugar wants to know which David Beckham look you like best, but I'm going to go ahead and politely choose all of the above. He's a little Friday afternoon manjoyment I'm always happy to share.
