Recent work with schools in Maine has shown the huge value of using a laptop across all of one's studies, as well as for play. Bringing the laptop home engages the family. In one Cambodian village where we have been working, there is no electricity, thus the laptop is, among other things, the brightest light source in the home. Finally, regarding recycled machines: if we estimate 100 million available used desktops, and each one requires only one hour of human attention to refurbish, reload, and handle, that is forty-five thousand work years. Thus, while we definitely encourage the recycling of used computers, it is not the solution for One Laptop per Child. How is it possible to get the cost so low? * First, by dramatically lowering the cost of the display. The first-generation machine will have a novel, dual-mode display that represents improvements to the LCD displays commonly found in inexpensive DVD players.

O-H's Townhouse to shut its doors

There are many things that people love about O-H's Townhouse: The steaks, of course, which you can select from an illuminated cooler. The family atmosphere. And the 40-plus years worth of memories accumulated in the cushy booths and red-neon glow of this Eureka institution -- from anniversaries and marriage proposals to birthday parties and soldiers' homecomings.

But if there's one thing about O-H's that people value above all else, it's that the place never seems to change. Until now.

This Friday, the venerable restaurant will serve its last meal before shutting its doors.

The Times-Standard recently sat down with Eureka Mayor Virginia Bass in one of the restaurant's U-shaped padded booths to discuss the end of an era that began when her father, O-H, opened the steakhouse in 1956.

Aussies laugh it off after their ship sinks

The Australians have been flown to Punta Arenas, southern Chile, and given food and clothing. Mr Christopher's sister, Ann Davies, said her brother, a long-time adventurer, was in high spirits. "He's well and was having a laugh about it on the phone," Mrs Davies said. "He's got quite a sense of humour." Mr Christopher told his sister the evacuation was orderly, though some passengers panicked. "They had plenty of time to get off the ship," Mrs Davies said. "It was very orderly. He would have been quite calm and probably assisting other people." The Chilean military was also ultimately involved in the rescue, ferrying 84 survivors to its Eduardo Frei Airbase on King George Island and another 70 to Uruguay's nearby Artigas military base. Mr Christopher, 53, a father of two from Melbourne and a former Korumburra dairy farmer, and Ms Frappell, in her 40s, had begun a 12-month round-the-world adventure holiday in September, but they now face a delay.

C.J.: We take you from dancing with Paris to caucusing with Scarlett

Bet it was difficult for David Koch to line up Paris Bennett for the opening of r.Norman's Steakhouse.

"No," CEO Koch said in total seriousness Thursday at a gala attended by about 3,000 at the new Block E meat market, which includes a nightclub and sushi bar. Maybe if I start calling him "Uncle David," which is how Paris refers to him, Koch could tell when I'm kidding.

Jamecia Bennett and her "American Idol" alum daughter were seriously rockin' to Erykah Badu's "On & On." Although raised in the church, Jamecia was shaking part of her body in a way that wasn't very holy. Reminded of this, Jamecia defiantly shook it again with a smile.

The highlight of the evening for B96 GM Steve Woodbury, who was in the company of his daughter Jenny, was when I told him that his friends Jamecia and Paris were upstairs.
