Legislator: Sorry for calling unmarried teen parents 'sluts'

Larry Liston said in a statement. “Because of my unfortunate choice of language, the message that I was trying to get across about personal responsibility, and parental responsibility, has been overshadowed.

"I certainly regret using the term I did."

Wednesday, Liston, appearing at a GOP legislative caucus in Denver, said: “In my parents' day and age, (unmarried teen parents) were sent away, they were shunned, they were called what they are. There was at least a sense of shame.

“There's no sense of shame today," Liston continued, according to the The Gazette of Colorado Springs. "Society condones it. ... I think it's wrong. They're sluts. And I don't mean just the women. I mean the men, too."

Rep. Stella Garza Hicks, who was at the meeting, said Liston should apologize.

Get Schooled

I think the larger problem isn't that students don't always like what their teachers select (for goodness' sake, that's been a problem since schools started assigning reading!)but rather that some teachers make consistently poor choices. By poor I don't mean that someone doesn't like the book, but that the teacher repeatedly "alienates" the same group.

I agree with you on all of your arguments, but I don't pretend that some teachers are not irresponsible in their "literature" selections.

As to how to entice more boys to read, did I actually see that you blamed parents?!

Montoya's NASCAR success paves way for new drivers

Montoya had one of the best rookie seasons in recent NASCAR history in 2007. He won a race, ran strong in several others and finished 20th in the Cup standings — better than most expected since he was making the difficult transition from open-wheel racing to stock cars.

In short, he set a new benchmark for others to follow.

There are plenty of followers, too.

Fellow open-wheel stars Dario Franchitti, Sam Hornish Jr., Jacques Villeneuve and Patrick Carpentier are making the same jump to NASCAR's top series this season. And they are hoping for similar results.

"Juan ended up in the top 20 in points and was Rookie of the Year. If I could do that, that's plenty good for me," Hornish said.

Clinton needs big win to cut into Obama's delegate lead

As much as Hillary Clinton wants to win Ohio on Tuesday, a two-percentage point win won't do her much good in the delegate count.

Under the complex mathematical formula the Ohio Democratic Party will use Tuesday to divvy up the 141 delegates at stake in Tuesday's Ohio primary, a candidate has to win big -- really big -- to win the lion's share of the delegates.

TXT-U service doesn't alert all

He said most of the complaints are from T-Mobile users.

Wolter said three individuals' cases are still pending, and "some of them possibly will not be resolved."

He said he didn't know the specifics of these cases.

Keen said he thinks the University should identify students who think they're set up to receive the messages but aren't.

"That's the right thing to do, to make sure everyone gets the text messages," he said. "They created them to keep people informed, because they wanted to get people to know what's going on, and obviously it's not doing that for everyone." .

The Surrender Lobby's Tet Offensive

General David Petraeus, letter to the troops December 28, 2007.

It has been a bad year for al-Qaeda in Iraq, and the Jihadis' allies in America are feeling their pain. Speaking to The Politico January 17, John Isaacs, executive director of the misnamed Council for a Livable World, explained: "last year was not productive. Our expectations were dashed."

The year 2007 began promisingly for the Democrats, who had taken control of the House and Senate after faking out voters with a squad of seemingly pro-military candidates. The "new" Democrats immediately showed their true colors, installing Rep. Nancy Pelosi, a pro-surrender member of the socialist "Progressive Caucus," as Speaker of the House.

By May, Rep. Jim McGovern, D-MA, was pledging, "Those of us who oppose this war will be back again and again and again and again until this war has ended." But it didn't work out that way.

Amateur film stunt results in near-hanging

A man in Burnaby, B.C., is recovering in hospital after an amateur attempt to film his own fake hanging nearly turned real.

The 23-year-old man and his 22-year-old friend went to a park in north Burnaby on Thursday afternoon to stage the mock hanging and capture it on video.

"The males thought they were well prepared and had taken the proper safety precautions by having the one male wear a harness," the RCMP said in a statement.

"Unfortunately, things did not go as planned and the male was unintentionally hung from the rope he had placed around his neck.

"Due to the fact this was intended to look like a real hanging, the male filming it let his friend hang for a short time before realizing that something had gone wrong."

Eventually the friend realized the man was unconscious and called 911 while he attempted a rescue.
